Brugia malayi
Microfilariae of Brugia malayi
The microfilariae of Brugia malayi share some similarities with those of other filarial parasites, but they also have distinct features. They are sheathed and have different sizes depending on whether they are observed in stained blood smears or in 2% formalin.
In stained blood smears, the microfilariae of Brugia malayi measure approximately 175—230 µm in length. However, in 2% formalin, they appear longer and measure around 240—300 µm.
One of the characteristic features of Brugia malayi microfilariae is their tapered tail. Additionally, there is a significant gap between the terminal and subterminal nuclei, which aids in distinguishing them from other similar microfilariae.
